Vulnerability Alerts for Developers: A Setup Guide

Setting up vulnerability alerts is one of the highest-leverage security tasks a development team can do. The challenge is not finding a tool -- it is configuring alerts that are precise enough to act on and quiet enough to avoid fatigue. This guide walks through a practical setup from start to finish.

Step 1: Define Your Technology Stack

Before configuring any alerts, you need a clear inventory of what you are running. This goes beyond your application dependencies. A complete stack definition includes:

Critical and High Severity

Medium Severity

These should be addressed within your regular sprint cycle. A daily or weekly email digest works well here. Alternatively, create tickets automatically in your project tracker.

Low and Informational

Log these for awareness but do not push notifications. A weekly summary or a dashboard view is sufficient. You do not want low-severity alerts desensitizing your team to the critical ones.

An important nuance: CVSS scores alone do not capture real-world risk. A CVSS 7.5 vulnerability with a public exploit and active exploitation is more urgent than a CVSS 9.8 that requires physical access. Look for tools that factor in exploit maturity and attack vector when prioritizing alerts.

Step 4: Set Up Version-Aware Matching

The difference between useful alerts and noise comes down to version matching. A CVE that affects lodash < 4.17.21 should not trigger an alert if you are already on 4.17.21. Make sure your monitoring tool supports version range matching, not just technology name matching.
